The Estate of James Lick (1796-1876) funded the erection of a home for aged women in San Francisco, CA, in 1884. In his day, Lick was one of the wealthiest men in the state, who controlled huge real estate holdings in Northern and Southern CA. He became a philanthropist at the end of his life, and created a significant charitable estate.
