This airfield was originally built for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) from 1941-1943, and used as a flight training school. Bombardiers trained here during the war. The name was changed to the "Victorville Army Air Field" on 04/23/1943, and, following the end of the war, to the "United States Air Force, Victorville Air Force Base" on 01/13/1948. The Air Force renamed it the "George Air Force Base" by 1950. President Clinton decommissioned the base in 12/1992. Once decommissioned, it became known as the "Southern California Logistics Airport." The Federal Correctional Complex at Victorville was built on portions of the base's former territory.
The web site Global Security.org described the base and its components: "George Air Force Base (GAFB) covers 5,339 acres which includes two runways (9,116 and 10,050 feet), 6.3 million square feet of ramp space and associated facilities; 1,641 units of housing; 14 dormitory buildings with 1,400 bed capacity; a hospital with a dental clinic; and various office and industrial structures. George Air Force Base (AFB) is located in Victorville, California, in the Mojave Desert approximately 90 miles northeast of Los Angeles."
