The Hughes Aircraft Company, Microwave Tube Division, operated a research and manufacturing facility at this location in 1962. Hughes was a major aerospace and defense contractor, taking in its share of federal defense appropriations during the Cold War. Los Angeles was filled with electronics companies producing items for the military on lucrative contracts, including Litton Industries, TRW, Wyle, Gilfillan and Packard Bell, to name a few. Money poured in to these CA defense contractors following the Soviet Union's 10/04/1957 launching of Sputnik, which chilled and motivated the US Government to increase its spending on rocket and electronics technologies.
