Rhodes Department Stores, Incorporated, and Western Department Stores, Incorporated, merged to form Rhodes Western Stores, Incorporated, in 1960. Honolulu, HI-based Amfac, the operator of Liberty House department stores, bought ailing Rhodes Western in 1969. In 1973, Amfac moved into a property at Tacoma Mall, a location that Rhodes Western had considered before its purchase. The Tacoma Mall store (as well as a former Rhodes Department Store at Villa Plaza Shopping Center in Lakewood, WA) were sold to the Seattle-based Frederick and Nelson chain in 1979.
