In 2004, a small controversy was touched off when the Valley Institute of Art announced its plans to commission a 26-foot by 90-foot mural by Kent Twitchell of Lillian Bronson, the so-called "Freeway Lady," depicted on the side of a Los Angeles hotel in 1974. The art school hoped to raise $65,000 to paint a revised mural of the Freeway Lady on an exterior wall of its gallery. Some were repelled by the large piece of public art, calling it "disturbing." A billboard company mistakenly painted over the original mural in 1986; during efforts at restoring it in 2000, vandals painted graffiti over it.
