Cowboy actor William S. Hart (1864-1946) assembled the Horseshoe Ranch beginning around 1910. Over time, he added other buildings, including several agricultural structures, a tea house and this 22-room Spanish Colonial mansion in 1925. The house and other buildings on the property have been administered since 1946 by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and William S. Hart Museum, while the 265-acre grounds have been maintained by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation. In 2011, the park grounds contained a nature trail, a farm animal exhibit, and a marauding herd of bison.

Set on the top of a hill, the two-story Hart House had a quintessential Spanish Colonial Revival look, with a red tile roof, white plaster walls, projecting, wooden, second-floor balcony, turret and provincial Spanish interior details.
