Building History

The architect Lilian J. Rice (1889-1938) worked for the San Diego architectural partnership of Requa and Jackson in the early 1920s, when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway's Rancho Santa Fe Land Improvement Company gave the firm a commission to design a civic center for its new real estate development at Rancho Santa Fe, CA. Knowing how talented Rice was, Requa and Jackson assigned her to this project. She worked on it for about five years between 1923 and 1928 while in their employ. In 1927, Rice became licensed as an Architecture in the State of CA, and founded her own firm in 1928.
