This cathedral replaced the Gothic Revival Saint Francis de Sales church destroyed in the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 10/17/1989. The earlier church was designated a cathedral when Pope John XXIII created the Diocese of Oakland in 1962. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new cathedral occurred in 2005, and blessing of the completed structure happened on 09/25/2008. Reverend Paul Minnihan of the local diocese served as the Provost of the project, collaborating with the architects, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill of San Francisco, CA, and supervising budgeting and programming.
(510) 832-5057 (2011). As designed by lead architect Craig Hartman, this remarkable Roman Catholic cathedral featured a conic, 136-foot glass spire that flooded the interior with light.
