The Santa Clara County Hall of Justice was situated on the southeast corner of West James Street and North Market Street.

Overview

Erected in 1908 close to Saint James Square, the Hall of Justice #1 was located nearby to Santa Clara County's other main buildings, the Courthouse #8, Jail, and Hall of Records. County officials razed the structure to make way for the new Santa Clara County Courthouse #9.

Building Notes

In 1914, the Santa Clara County Library District established its first location in the Hall of Justice. Its web site stated: "July 1, 1914 - Santa Clara County Library was established in the Hall of Justice, which was located on the corner of Market and St. James Streets in San Jose, California. Two years earlier, a one-cent tax had been levied for the purpose of supporting a county library. It provided $3,700 for the first year of operation." (See Santa Clara County Library District.org, "Santa Clara County Library District 1914 - 2014," published 2014, accessed 09/27/2018.)

Demolition

The building was torn down in 1962 to make way for Ernest J. Kump and Associates' new Santa Clara County Courthouse #9, built on its site between 1962 and 1964.
