Rice designed the one-story Fairchild House for Lot 2 Block 21 of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad's Rancho Santa Fe housing development. She configured the residence in a U-shape around an entry courtyard. Two side wings projected forward, each flat-roofed, housing on one side the kitchen and service rooms, on the other, bedrooms. The central rooms of the U contained the living room, library and a bedroom, all covered by a higher gable roof clad in clay tile. The ceilings of these rooms would have had more loft and grandeur than those of the wings.
