G.Z. Brown and Mark DeKay wrote of the Wallen Maybeck House's siting: "Bernard Maybeck set the Wallen Maybeck House on the top of a cool, windy hill near Berkeley, California. The southwest facing outdoor space is surrounded on two sides by the house, on a third by the garage, and on the fourth by a low wall. The organization allows the occupants to keep the view while being protected from winter winds from the north-northwest. (Woodbridge, 1992, pg. 199-209)." Brown and DeKay referred to Sally B. Woodbridge, Bernard Maybeck: Visionary Architect, [New York: Abbeville Press, 1992], p. 199-209. (See Brown, G.Z., and DeKay, Mark, "Rooms & Courtyards: Location and Orientation," Sun, Wind & Light, [New York: John Wiley and Sons, Incorporated, 2001], p. 139.)
