Professor Glenn Hughes (1894-1964) shuttered this leased performance space on 42nd Street NE and University Way NE when a student strike disrupted performances in 04/1938. Hughes closed the Studio Theatre #1, a traditional proscenium-style stage and an arena performance space, the Penthouse Theatre #1. Hughes was a pioneer in the concept of arena theatre with seats encircling the stage. He employed the arena stage almost exclusively for comedies.
