Building Notes

This arena, theatre-in-the-round was closed down by Professor Glenn Hughes (1894-1964) when a student strike disrupted performances in 04/1938. Hughes closed this space, the first arena-type performance venue at UW, and the Studio, a more traditional, proscenium-framed stage. Hughes was a pioneer in the concept of arena theatre with seats encircling the stage. The arena stage was used almost exclusively for comedies.
