William Semple Green (1832–1905) and his two wives, Josephine Davis Green (d. 1881) and Sally Morgan Green, (whom he married in 1891) lived in this residence from 1868 until the early 20th century. Green, an early settler drawn to CA during the Gold Rush, settled in the town of Colusa, CA, and became a significant statewide advocate for systematic irrigation. He helped to form the Sacramento Valley Irrigation Company in 06/1863 and served as its first President. As President, he initiated construction on the Central Irrigation District Canal in 1888; Green was an active booster for the state, a backer of the concept of states rights, and worked as a newspaperman and real estate developer within the Colusa County region. An uncle of Green's, Colonel Charles D. Semple, (1814-1872) founded the City of Colusa in 1850, after he bought the Mexican land grant Rancho Colus from Anglo pioneer John Bidwell (1819-1900) in that year.
Judge Richard E. Patton renovated the house to resemble its appearance in 1880.
