The United States Army authorized the construction of Fort Bidwell on 06/10/1865 as a central organizing point for OR-CA military operations against the Snake and Modoc Indians in the second half of the nineteenth century. Fort Bidwell was one of seven military fortifications built by the military to protect settlers between Red Bluff, CA, and mining regions near the mouth of the Owyhee River on the OR and ID border. The Army closed the facility in 1890.
