Building History
The Fireman's Fund Insurance Company originated in San Francisco, CA, in 1863. The company grew steadily in the nineteenth century, first in Northern CA and then in the Pacific Northwest. By the 1870s, it was developing a national network of agents.
In 1867, D.J. Staples was the firm’s president, and Charles R. Bond remained secretary. (See Langley’s San Francisco City Directory, 1867, p. 193.)
Building Notes
In 1866, the North British and Mercantile Insurance Company of London had its San Francisco office on the southeast corner of Sansome and California Streets, across the street from the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company Building. (See North British and Mercantile Insurance Company of London advertisement, Daily Alta California, vol. 18, no. 7030, 12/24/1866, p. 2.)
Demolition
Its three-story headquarters in San Francisco was destroyed in the Great Earthquake and Fire of 04/18/1906.
