This monument honored Commodore John D. Sloat, the American naval officer who claimed Alta California for the United States on 07/07/1846. He entered the harbor following a brief battle with local authorities and raised the flag over the Monterey Customs house, reading an official proclamation that the state had been annexed to the US. The San Francisco architectural firm of Bakewell and Brown produced this monument.
