The Lace House operated at 1069-1071 Washington Street in 1891.

Overview

The Lace House operated at 1069 Washington Street between 1889 and 1891, when its name was changed to the "H.C. Capwell Company." Harris C. Capwell kept the name "Lace House" in its store's advertising well into the 20th century, however. The Capwell store operated at this location until a large new facility was constructed on Clay Street between 14th and 15th Streets in 1912.

Building History

Businessman Harris Cebert "H. C." Capwell (born 02/10/1858-d. 07/09/1929) established his Lace House Department Store in Downtown Oakland on Washington Street in 1889. The store dealt in fancy and dry goods initially, but then expanded its range to become a full-scale department store. (See Oakland, California, City Directory, 1891, p. 508.)

The Lace House Department Store changed its name to the "H.C. Capwell Company Department Store" in 1891. (The Oakland, California, City Directory, 1891, [p. 508], indicated that the store was still known as the "Lace House" in 1891, so the name was probably changed later in the year.) As late as 1912, H.C. Capwell advertisements noted the name "Lace House" in their title block. (See Capwell advertisement, San Francisco Call, 05/13/1910, p. 13.)

A new Capwell's Department Store replaced this building in 03/1912.
