Macerich, a Santa Monica, CA-based developer of shopping centers owned Washington Square in 2011. This firm also owned Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek, CA. Mace Siegel founded Macerich in Ames, IA, in 1964, but moved the business to Santa Monica before 1980.

Washington Square was a shopping center containing, in 2009, approximately 170 stores. The largest "anchor" tenants included Dicks Sporting Goods and the department stores Macy's, J.C. Penney, Sears and Nordstrom in 2011. An Embassy Suites Hotel was located adjacent to Washington Square.
