This military base was known as the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC), Muroc Lake Bombing and Gunnery Range from 09/1933-07/22/1942; it became the USAAC, Army Air Base, Muroc Lake, from 07/23/1942-09/01/1942; the Army Air Base, Muroc, 09/02/1942-11/07/1943; the Muroc Army Airfield, 11/08/1943-02/11/1948; the Muroc Air Force Base, 02/12/1948-12/07/1949. On 12/08/1949, the United States Air Force (USAF) renamed the Muroc base to commemorate the accomplishments of pilot Glen Edwards (1918–48), who died (along with four other crew members) at the helm of the experimental Northrop YB-49 "Flying Wing" airplane on 06/05/1948.
A town near Rogers Lake was known originally as "Muroc," the reversed last name of early pioneers, Ralph, Clifford and Effie Corum.
