At the beginning of World War II, the United States Army leased 160,000 acres of land between Ellensburg, WA, and Yakima, WA. This became known as the "Yakima Firing Center" when it was purchased (along with 101,000 additional acres) by the Army in 1951. By 2010, this amount of land had expanded to 327,000 acres, and the facility had been renamed the "Yakima Training Center." Soldiers stationed at Fort Lewis, WA, have used the land for various training purposes.
