In 1972, Sur La Table founded its first kitchenwares store at a one-story location just to the east of the Pike Place Market, around 80 Stewart Street. Due to the imminent construction of the Stewart House Hotel, Sur La Table moved south across the street to 84 Pine Street in 1980. It initially focused on importing hard-to-find, French, cooking utensils. Sur La Table became a nation-wide chain, with 75 stores across the US in 2010.
