In 1914, this building was occupied by the Hackel and Gutterman Company, producer of cloaks and suits. According to historian Eileen V. Wallis, this sweatshop operation provided a substandard workplace for women employees, paying them low wages and subjecting them to abuse. (See Eileen V.
