This huge dam, spanning the Columbia River, took seven years to build between 1947-1954. It operated at partial capacity from 1954-1957, and has run at full capacity since 1957 producing 980 MW of electricity. Before construction began, the dam was originally to be called the Umatilla Dam, but by 1945 legislators determined that it should be named for OR's Republican Senator Charles L. McNary (1874-1944), who advocated dam-building on the Columbia.
The dam was 7,365 feet long and 183 feet high when built.
