This block house, also referred to as Fort Decatur, stood at the intersection of Front Street (1st Avenue South) and Cherry Street, on the west side of Front. It was a tall, two-story, gable-roofed building, completed in 10/1855. A South Block House stood on the southeast corner of Main Street and Occidental Avenue South (2nd Avenue South). Both structures provided sanctuaries for early white settlers during attacks from nearby Native American tribes. Sailors from the U.S.S.Decatur manned both North and South Block Houses.
