This huge hospital, Chateauesque in style, served a large population of tubercular, alcoholic and mentally ill patients. It opened in 1893, and was a main public institution of its kind in Southern CA at the time. In 1916, it was one of the complex's three main treatment buildings, the other two being a Convalescent Hospital and Tuberculosis Pavilions.
