During a provisioning stop aboard his yacht, John Spreckels came to San Diego, CA, and was impressed by the city's growth in 1887. He decided on making some real estate investments there, and by the following year, had constructed a wharf at the end of D Street, now known as Broadway, Nearby to this, he also financed the construction of coal storage facilities.
