Orson Thomas Johnson (02/05/1839-1916), a transplanted dry goods merchant from Galesburg, IL, came to Riverside, CA, in 1880 to recover his health. He had been a civic leader in Galesburg, and became one in Riverside (as was his brother, A.P., who became State Senator in Riverside and San Diego Counties). Shortly after arrival, he bought an orange grove and erected this house on Magnolia Avenue where he lived until 1890, when he moved permanently to Los Angeles, CA, to be closer to many of his real estate properties. O.T. Johnson owned the Westminster Hotel in Los Angeles, a fashionable lodging spot in the late 1890s.
