Up until 1939, a F.W. Woolworth Department Store occupied the 40 foot by 165 foot storefront at 133-135 South Broadway. In late 08/1939, the new Thrifty Drug Store chain opened a 7,500-square-foot outlet there, according to the Los Angeles Times, "one of the organization's most modern...." (See "Broadway Lease Deal Signed, Los Angeles Times, 08/20/1939, p. E1.) In 1920, F. W. Woolworth opened another store at 617 South Broadway.
