The photographer Carleton E. Watkins (born 11/11/1829 in Oneonta, NY-died 06/23/1916 in Napa, CA) rented space in this building for use as a studio in 1863. He opened a new gallery, "Yo Semite Gallery" at 425 Montgomery Street in 1865.
