Citrus and walnut farmer, John F. Cummings, Jr., donated between $100,000-$200,000 to assist with the construction of a Community Center for the City of Santa Paula, CA, it was announced in late December 1959. Robert Raymond, a local architect who had done several buildings for the local government, got the design commission. In 1959, it was to be located on land formerly occupied by the city government's old administrative buildings, across the road from the City Hall. Cummings's family settled in the Santa Paula area from OH in 1869.
