SDSU administration renamed the facility, built as Cox Arena, on 07/01/2009 for the Viejas Native American Tribe. The tribe maintained a casino, an outlet center and other businesses on its reservation 22 miles east of SDSU. The Viejas paid $6.9 million for 10-year naming rights. The change would occur only if the word "Casino" or other words pertaining to gambling were not in the name.
