Endowed with a $400,000 bequest by Jellis Clute Wilmerding (1833-1894), the Regents of the University of California founded the Wilmerding School of Industrial Arts, which began operations in buildings located next to the California School of Mechanical Arts in San Francisco, CA, also known as the Lick School for its founder James Lick (1796-1876). For nearly its entire history the Wilmerding School operated cooperatively with its neighbors (which by 1912 also included the Lux School for Industrial Training for Girls); in 1939, it consolidated with Lick, forming Lick-Wilmerding High School. The Lux School, named for donor Miranda Lux (d. 1894), ended operations in 1952.
