The Delaware-based E.I. duPont deNemours Company chemical conglomerate bought approximately five square miles of land near Tacoma, WA, on which to build a plant in 1906. Manufacturing black powder and high explosives, the DuPont Explosive Company began operations in 1909; the factory was surrounded by a 3,200-acre company town, that thrived until c. 1975. At that time, the factory closed, triggering development by others and diversifying the town's character.
