Scotsman Alexander Baillie, who came to the U.S. from Saint Andrews, Scotland, the cradle of golf, joined with 15 of his subordinates at the stock trading company, Balfour Guthrie Company, to build the first golf course west of the Mississippi River on 280 acres in South Tacoma, WA. This course operated for 11 years, moving to a new home next on the American Lake in Lakewood, WA, the current facilities of the Tacoma Country and Golf Club.
