The Student Center was built at the same time as a neighboring Drama Lab, also a tensile fabric structure, and cost approximately $2.1 million. The Student Center consisted of a 4-cone tent, focused on a main 2-story space that served as a field house on the top floor and locker rooms, broadcasting studio, and offices on the lower. The other tents were to shelter a flexible array of "micro-environments," offices, meeting rooms, etc. The Shaver Partnership of Salina, KS, served as the architect; Bob D. Campbell and Company was one engineering consultant, and T.Y. Lin, Kulka, Yang and Associates was another engineering consultant. Birdair Structure fabricated the Teflon-coated fiberglass fabric and Research and Design Institute was the interior designer.
