This house was in the Roanoke Park neighborhood of Northeast Seattle.

Overview

This distinguihsed Modern house and its neighbor at 1108 East Shelby Street, the Cushman House, were planned and built in tandem. Sited on a gradual slope, both houses had rectangular shapes and were placed with their narrow dimensions facing the street. The houses have a stark rectilinear purity, reflective of Mies van der Rohe's influence on young architects in the early 1950s.

Building History

John and Audrey Van Horne planned this house in the Roanoke Park Neighborhood of Seattle, WA, in 1953, about 5 years after arriving in the city from New York, NY. John Van Horne served as his own building contractor.

Building Notes

Architect's own house; the Van Hornes lived in this house and raised 5 children here over 50 years.
