Building History
This was an early house designed by the firm of John Van Horne. Jr., (1918-2003), Architect; Audrey Van Horne (born 1924) worked with John, but was not a named partner until 1956, when she became a Registered Architect in the State of Washington. The house had long, linear plan (17 feet by 70 feet), configured to allow Mount Rainier to be seen from each room. The plan, a line of rooms along a single loaded corridor, was consistent with other "solar houses" built in the U.S. during the 1940s-1950s. (See Maron J. Simon, Your Solar House; a Book of Practical Homes for all Parts of the Country, New York: Simon and Schuster, 1947)
