Building History

This building was owned by John Hoge (1840-1917), a partner in the Zanesville, OH, soap business, Schultz and Company, who purchased several parcels of real estate in Seattle, WA, during the early twentieth century.

Building Notes

This small, 3-story building stood on the corner of 1st Avenue South and South Washington Street c. 1915; it resembled in massing Hoge's building at the corner of 2nd Avenue and Cherry Street, but had a more had a utilitarian, unornamented appearance. The corner was beveled and admitted pedestrians to the Quick Shoe Repair that existed here c. 1915. All ground floor spaces were filled with retail shops, including Bell Loan Office and Bloom's Cafe. The upper two floors housed rented offices.
