Thomas Robinson, an Irish immigrant, came with his family to Germantown, PA, in the late 19th century. He moved to Tacoma, WA, where he began to work in the millwork factories there. He resolved to start his own company, which he did in 1889. He selected a port site in Everett, WA, and opened his first factory in 1891. Robinson stayed in this location until 1900, when he sold this property to the North Star Timber Company; he searched for a site adjacent to deep water suitable for schooners and steamships, and decided on a location 2 blocks to the north in Everett.
