In the early 20th century, advocates of a "Back to the Land Movement" in the U.S. promoted the creation of small, efficient, family farms on the fringes of urban areas as an alternative to factory work. One type of work often advocated was the creation of small chicken farms. In California, clusters of chicken farms opened up in the cities of East Palo Alto, Owensmouth and particularly Petaluma. This was one of those enterprises that advertised chicks for sale in newspapers throughout the state. (See, for example, the classified ad placed by the Must Hatch Incubator Company in the Los Angeles Times, 12/16/1928, p. I14.)
