John Gatley Downey (1830-1894), California's Governor between 01/14/1860-01/10/1862, erected this house. Downey was active in the city's banking community and it was for him that the City of Downey, CA, was named.

The original Downey House was an elaborate, but modestly scaled Second Empire Style house. It had a mansard roof, embellished with polychromed shingles. A deeply-inset front porch covered the main entrance. Wall dormers illuminated second floor rooms. Delicate ironwork trimmed the eaves line.

A two-story addition was made to one side of the original Second Empire house. The addition, topped by a hipped roof, was notable for its prominent quoins and keystones above the windows.

Demolished.
