The building was erected after the college's foundation in 1869. In 1881, the owner of the neighboring Arlington Hotel #1, Col. Hollister, purchased the college building and turned it into an annex to his hotel. By the late 1890s, the hotel was called the "San Marcos Hotel."
This four-story hotel was a free-standing structure located behind the main hotel, but it exceeded it in size. The Annex had complex roof lines, with gabled dormers, mansard elements and chateauesque towers.
