Thomas and Maria Coupe were the first white settlers to stake a claim on Whidbey Island in 1854; as there was a dearth of milled timber at this time, Coupe brought redwood up from San Francisco to frame and clad his dwelling.
The Coupe House has been moved twice to avoid consistent bluff erosion.
