This Customs House was erected to collect customs duties on the timber being shipped internationally from Port Townsend, WA; timber mills began operations in the area as far back as 1848. In an economic decline starting in 1893, Port Townsend lost many of its lumber mills and eventually its U.S. Customs House in 1913, when the facility moved to the fast-growing city of Seattle, WA.
