This was the first dedicated county courthouse built in Clallam County; Port Angeles won the right to host the county seat, when it defeated the neighboring town of Port Crescent in a special election in 1890. Between 1890-1914, the county government operated in a series of temporary quarters.

To provide additional power, an array of 126 solar panels was added to the courthouse in 1979. This courthouse underwent a significant remodeling in 1999.
