Although Pierce County voters approved funds for the construction of a new County-City Administration Building in 1952, the construction process didn't begin until 1956. In that year, the project was set to cost just under $10 million. Officials intended that the Administration Building would include three parts: a 10-story (plus penthouse level), 165-foot-tall administration/office building; a 2-story, soundproofed, reinforced concrete courtroom; and a 4-story law enforcement building to be completed later. The steel framing of the County-City Building was produced by the Bethlehem Pacific Coast Steel Corporation plant in Seattle, WA. Some of the framing was in place by 04/1957. The building was more than half-way finished by 03/1958. Construction on the building took over two years, with the formal dedication occurring on 04/10/1959.
