Building History

The Central School opened a year before the Oregon Territory entered the Union; it accommodated 280 students and had 3 teachers, and cost $6,000 to build. The school was moved one block north after its property was bought by developer P.A. Marquam in 1883. Marquam, railroad investor Henry Villard and others pooled $125,000 to build a grand hotel on the site, known as the Portland Hotel. It was at least the second hotel in Portland to have this name.

Demolition

The Central School was razed to make room for the Selling Building.in about 1908.
