Beginning in 1912, the Sisters of Mercy operated the first, small, 6-room, wood-frame hospital in Oxnard, CA; it has, like most hospitals, grown steadily in size on a new parcel of land. The original was 10 acres; the current Saint John's Regional Medical Center contains 265 beds set on a 48-acre site.
