Building History

Ambrose McCarthy Patterson (1877-1967) and his wife, Viola Hansen Patterson (1898-1984), Art Professors at the University of Washington (UW), commissioned John R. Sproule (1908-1993) to design this notably modern house in 1936. They retained Butler Sturtevant to supply the landscape plan. Ambrose founded the UW's program in painting and design in 1919, and he taught here until his retirement in 1947. Viola taught at the UW in the Art Department from 1947 until 1966.

Alteration

Sproule designed an addition to the house, a studio space for the Pattersons. Ambrose was a painter.
